The 1917 fire in Salonika
The 1917 fire in Salonika (Thessaloniki), Greece, was a devastating event that destroyed much of the city's Jewish quarter, including the Sabbatean community. The fire broke out on August 18, 1917, and quickly spread, fueled by strong winds and the densely packed wooden buildings in the Jewish quarter.

Yeni Cami
The “Yeni Cami” was built in the early 20th century (1902) in Salonika during the late Ottoman period. It was specifically designed by the Italian architect Vitaliano Poselli and has a unique architectural style that combines Islamic, Byzantine, and European elements. This postcard was sent during a period when the region was still under Ottoman rule before being incorporated into Greece following the Balkan Wars.

Mevlevi tekkes in Salonica played a significant role not only for Sufis but also for other groups like the Sabbateans. In the unique cultural and religious environment of Salonica, where multiple religious and mystical traditions coexisted, Sabbateans were known to engage with the spiritual practices of the Mevlevi Order.

Johann Vorndran came to Turkey as an engineer to build bridges for the railways before World War II. While constructing bridges in Anatolia, he also rented a house for his family in Istanbul. His son, Hans-Jürgen, was attending the German High School at the time. He took this photo with his classmate, Melek.
